What Water Temperature Is Best for Baby Swimming?

When parents are preparing to take their baby swimming for the first time, they often think about what to bring, what their baby should wear and how they might respond to the water. But there is another factor that can make a significant difference to those early experiences: the temperature of the pool.


Babies can lose body heat more quickly than adults, which is why baby swimming water temperature deserves particular consideration. A pool that feels perfectly acceptable to an adult may feel quite different to a young baby.


So, what temperature should you look for when swimming with your baby, and is warmer always better?


Why Water Temperature Matters for Baby Swimming


For adults, getting into a cool swimming pool might feel refreshing. Babies experience temperature differently. Their smaller bodies have a greater surface-area-to-mass ratio than adults, which contributes to faster heat loss.


Temperature can also affect the overall experience. When babies are physically comfortable, they are better placed to relax, move, play and engage with their parent and teacher. This is one of the reasons we place such importance on warm water for baby swimming at Aquanat.


What Is the Ideal Baby Pool Temperature?


There isn't one temperature that will suit every baby in every situation. Age, time spent in the pool, activity level and the surrounding environment can all make a difference.


Royal Life Saving Australia recommends a minimum of 30°C for infants in aquatic programs, while Healthdirect suggests that a heated pool at around 32°C is ideal for babies younger than six months.


These figures are useful when considering baby pool temperature, but a recommended minimum and a temperature designed specifically for comfort aren't necessarily the same thing.


We've noticed babies getting shivery at even 33°C, especially during a 30min swimming class. So at Aquanat, our indoor hydrotherapy pool is maintained at approximately 34–35°C for utmost comfort. We have found that this warm environment is particularly well suited to the calm, relaxed style of baby swimming we offer, for both baby and parents.


How Babies Respond to Water That Is Too Cold


Babies can't tell us that they are feeling cold, so parents and teachers need to pay attention to their behaviour and physical cues.


A baby who is becoming uncomfortable may begin shivering, seem unusually unsettled or stop engaging with activities they were previously enjoying. Their lips or skin may also appear unusually pale or bluish. If you are concerned that your baby is becoming cold, it is best to leave the water, dry them thoroughly and warm them up.


It's also worth remembering that crying doesn't automatically mean a baby is cold. Babies can become unsettled for many reasons, including hunger, tiredness, unfamiliar surroundings or simply having had enough stimulation for the day.


Can Babies Swim in Cold Water?


Babies can certainly encounter cooler water in everyday family life, but a cold pool is not the environment we would choose for structured early swimming experiences. Healthdirect specifically notes that very young babies can become cold if the water isn't suitably warm.


For baby swimming, the goal isn't to teach babies to tolerate cold. We want them to have the physical comfort that allows them to explore the water, interact with their parent and gradually develop confidence and aquatic skills.


That said, you don't necessarily need to hold back from dipping in the ocean with your little one and sharing with them fun early water exposure experiences! Those can be important too. Just make sure to monitor for signs it's time to step out and warm up. 


Why Warm Water Can Make Early Swimming More Comfortable


Think about your own reaction when you step into a cold pool. Your body might tense, your shoulders rise and your breathing changes. In comfortably warm water, it is usually much easier to relax. 


In our pool at Aquanat, sighs of relief when stepping into the pool are quite common.

For babies, that physical comfort can be especially valuable.


Warm water for baby swimming allows us to focus on relaxation, movement, buoyancy, breath control, play and interaction rather than spending the lesson trying to keep babies warm through constant movement.


This is also why we value warm water during early swimming as part of creating positive early experiences around water. Temperature alone doesn't create water confidence, but a comfortable environment can help give babies the opportunity to explore without unnecessary physical stress.


How to Tell If the Water Is Comfortable for Your Baby


Rather than relying only on how the water feels to you, watch your baby.


A comfortable baby will often have a relatively relaxed body, remain interested in their surroundings and be willing to interact, move and play. Their hands and feet may feel cooler than the rest of their body, so these aren't always the best indication of overall comfort.


Pay attention to changes. If your baby begins shivering, becomes increasingly unsettled, seems unusually quiet or shows changes in skin colour, it's time to get out and warm up.


Parents know their babies well. If something doesn't seem right, don't feel that you need to remain in the pool simply because a lesson or swimming session hasn't finished.


Does Water Temperature Change as Babies Get Older?


Older babies and children generally have a greater capacity to regulate their body temperature than very young infants, and they often become considerably more active in the pool.


An older child who is continuously kicking, swimming and climbing is generating more body heat than a young baby who spends much of a lesson being supported by a parent.

This is one reason swimming lessons for older children don't necessarily require the same pool conditions as baby classes.


However, comfortable water can still be valuable for older children, particularly beginners who spend periods listening, waiting or practising slower movements. What Should Parents Look for in a Baby Swimming Pool?


Temperature is important, but it shouldn't be considered in isolation.


When choosing a pool for your baby, consider the overall environment: water quality, cleanliness, supervision, teacher experience, class size, noise levels, changing facilities and whether the program allows babies to progress according to their individual readiness.


For very young children, also consider how long they will actually spend in the water. Royal Life Saving Australia's guidelines recommend that in-water class times for infants should not exceed 30 minutes.


Most importantly, young children need constant adult supervision around water.

What Temperature Does Aquanat Use for Baby Swimming?


At Aquanat, we keep our indoor hydrotherapy pool at approximately 34–35°C.

That is warmer than many conventional swimming pools, and it's very intentional.


Our approach to baby swimming begins with relaxation, trust and connection. Rather than relying on constant vigorous activity to keep babies warm, the pool itself provides a comfortable environment where parents and babies can slow down, explore movement and enjoy being together in the water.


Our pool is indoors and protected from the weather, with only one class in the pool at a time. Together with small classes and familiar teachers, the warm water helps create the calm environment we want for our youngest swimmers.

Healthdirect describes a heated pool of around 32°C as ideal for babies under six months, so 32°C isn't generally considered too cold. However, every baby is different, and comfort can also depend on how long they are in the water and how active they are. At Aquanat, we've chosen a warmer 34–35°C hydrotherapy pool, allowing our lessons to include relaxed floating, slower activities and quiet parent-and-baby interaction without needing to keep everyone continuously moving.

Babies can enjoy different water experiences with their families, including brief experiences in cooler water, but very young babies can become cold more readily than adults.
